Santosh Trophy: Chief Minister Awards Jobs to Bengal Champions, Honoring Football Glory

Alipore, Kolkata: In a significant move that blends sports and societal upliftment, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee fulfilled her promise of providing government jobs to the victorious Santosh Trophy-winning Bengal football team. In a ceremony held at the Dhandhanya Theatre in Alipore on Tuesday morning, the players received appointment letters for roles in the state police, marking a historic moment for Bengal football.

The event was a grand affair, attended by notable dignitaries, including Sports Minister Arup Biswas, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim, Education Minister Bratya Basu, and other cabinet members. Alongside them were key figures from the sports fraternity, such as IFA President Ajit Bandopadhyay, Chairman Subrata Dutta, Executive Secretary Sufal Ranjan Giri, and Bengal Olympic Association President Chandan Roy Chowdhury.

A Promise Fulfilled

Mamata Banerjee had earlier pledged to secure jobs for the Santosh champions, acknowledging the financial challenges many players face. True to her word, the footballers received their appointment letters, assigning them positions as sub-inspectors and constables in the West Bengal Police, based on their educational qualifications.

The Chief Minister expressed her pride in the team’s accomplishment, emphasizing that the initiative aims to inspire athletes across all sports disciplines in Bengal “This victory is not just a moment of celebration but a beacon for aspiring talents in the state,” she continued.

A Day of Recognition

Coach Sanjay Sen, whose leadership propelled Bengal to its 33rd Santosh Trophy title, was visibly elated. Reflecting on the government’s gesture, he said, “This recognition is a landmark for Bengal sports. Such encouragement from the state will motivate countless athletes to strive for excellence.”

The team’s path to glory was marked by grit and determination, culminating in a thrilling victory over Kerala in the final held in Hyderabad. Ravi Hansda’s decisive goal clinched the title, earning the team widespread acclaim.

Despite the celebrations, Coach Sen issued a word of caution to the players, urging them to remain humble and focus on future goals. “Success is fleeting if not anchored by hard work and humility,” he declared.
