71-Year-Old Sudeep Banerjee Stuns South Asia Masters Athletics Championship with Five Medals

Mangaluru – Age is just a number, and Sudeep Banerjee has proved it yet again! The 71-year-old athlete defied all odds by bagging five medals, including two golds, at the recently concluded South Asia Masters Athletics Open Championship. His remarkable achievements have not only brought him personal glory but have also lit up the sporting community in Jalpaiguri.

Participating in multiple events, Banerjee clinched gold in the 80-meter hurdles and the 400-meter relay. He also secured silver medals in the high jump and 300-meter hurdles, along with a bronze in his favorite event. Despite being a septuagenarian, his dedication to the sport remains unwavering, as he continues to train rigorously in the morning and afternoon, a routine he has maintained for over five decades.

A true veteran of athletics, Banerjee’s passion for the sport traces back to his student days. Over the years, he has earned numerous accolades at both national and international levels, competing in countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka. His latest feat at the South Asia Masters Athletics Open Championship adds to his ever-growing list of achievements.

Speaking about his victory, Banerjee expressed his excitement and reaffirmed his commitment to athletics. I have never gone into a competition and come away empty-handed.. This is the result of regular practice and unwavering dedication. As long as my body supports me, I will keep running on the track,” he said.

Currently, Banerjee trains at the Sai Center at the Biswa Bangla Sports Complex in Jalpaiguri. A former employee of the irrigation department, he remains a source of inspiration for aspiring athletes. His next target? Another international athletics meet in Sri Lanka, where he hopes to extend his winning streak.

Banerjee’s story is a testament to perseverance, passion, and the belief that age is no barrier to achieving greatness. As he continues his journey, his remarkable success serves as motivation for young and veteran athletes alike, proving that the spirit of competition knows no age limit.
