In a medical feat that defies all odds, a 58-year-old factory worker from Shyampur has been given a second chance at life after a horrific accident nearly cost him his left hand. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of doctors at RG Kar Medical College Hospital, Kartik, who lost his palm and fingers in a gruesome industrial accident, is now regaining movement and sensation in his reattached hand.

A Tragic Workplace Mishap

On February 4, while working in a factory in Jana Dome, Kartik’s hand got caught in a rolling machine. The powerful mechanism crushed his wrist, severing his palm and fingers. His family rushed him to a local hospital, but due to the severity of his injury, he was referred to RG Kar Medical College Hospital, where his fate took a dramatic turn.

The Six-Hour Battle to Restore a Hand

Upon arrival, doctors in the plastic surgery department immediately recognized the urgency of the situation. A highly skilled surgical team, led by Dr. Rupnarayan Bhattacharya and comprising senior residents Apurba Kumar Nayek, Bikash Chandra Dey, Diprasattva Mohapatra, and anesthesia expert Aniket Mahato, undertook an extensive six-hour surgery to reattach the severed portion of Kartik’s hand.

During the intricate procedure, the team meticulously repaired two vital arteries, veins, nerves, and tendons that were completely severed. Additionally, the shattered bones in his wrist were realigned and fixed, ensuring stability in the reconstruction.

A Remarkable Recovery

To the amazement of the doctors, Kartik is already showing promising signs of recovery. He is now able to move his fingers, and even more astonishingly, has regained sensation in his hand. Medical experts confirm that his oxygen levels can be accurately measured using a pulse oximeter attached to his reattached finger—an indication of restored blood circulation.

Dr. Bhattacharya emphasized the significance of timely intervention, stating, “In cases of limb reattachment, the first six hours are known as the golden period. Kartik’s treatment began much later, making his successful recovery even more extraordinary.” While his initial surgery has been a success, doctors have scheduled a second operation in a month to reconnect nerves and tendons for further improvement.

Hope Restored: A Patient’s Gratitude

For Kartik, the ordeal was nothing short of a nightmare. The thought of losing his hand forever left him devastated. However, thanks to the medical marvel performed by RG Kar’s team, he is now hopeful about his future. “I was shattered when I thought my hand was gone forever. But now, with it reattached, I feel my strength returning,” he expressed with renewed optimism.

A Testament to Modern Medical Excellence

This case stands as a testament to the incredible advancements in reconstructive surgery and the dedication of medical professionals who go beyond the call of duty to restore lives. Kartik’s journey of resilience and recovery serves as an inspiration, proving that with expert care and determination, even the most devastating injuries can be overcome.
