In a shocking turn of events, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) is set to expel Malda city president Narendranath Tiwari, who has been identified as the primary conspirator in the gruesome murder of Dulal Sarkar, a TMC councillor and vice-president of the party’s Malda district unit. This decision comes directly from the state leadership and will be formally announced by Malda district TMC president Abdul Rahim Bakshi at a press conference scheduled for Thursday at 2:30 pm.
The murder of Dulal Sarkar on January 2 has sent shockwaves through the region. He was gunned down by assailants on a motorcycle near his plywood factory in Englishbazar town. He was taken to the hospital immediately, but his injuries caused him to pass away. The cold-blooded killing has been linked to a financial transaction involving a betel nut contract worth ₹50 lakh, allegedly orchestrated by Tiwari and his close associate, Swapan Sharma.
Police Investigation Unravels a Chilling Plot
According to Supratim Sarkar, ADG (South Bengal), Narendranath Tiwari and Swapan Sharma masterminded the assassination. Swapan, known for his involvement in multiple criminal activities, played a key role in hiring four contract killers for the job. Two of these individuals have been apprehended, while the others remain at large. The police have also seized evidence, including financial transactions and call records, that implicate Tiwari and Sharma directly in the crime.
The seven arrests made so far include two of the alleged shooters and individuals who facilitated the contract. Tiwari and Sharma were taken into custody on Tuesday night following an intensive interrogation. Both were presented in court on Wednesday, where a judge ordered their three-day police custody for further questioning.
Party Takes Action Amid Mounting Pressure
In light of these revelations, the TMC leadership has decided to sever ties with Tiwari. Trinamool state vice-president Jayaprakash Majumdar confirmed that instructions had been issued to the Malda district committee to expel Tiwari. This move underscores the ruling party’s attempt to distance itself from individuals linked to criminal activities and maintain its political integrity.
Sources within the party have described the decision as necessary to address the growing outrage among the public and within the party ranks. “This is not just a question of party image but also about ensuring justice for Dulal Sarkar and his family,” a senior TMC leader commented.
