Sonmarg, Jammu and Kashmir – In a monumental step toward enhancing connectivity and tourism, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Z-Morh Tunnel in Ganderbal district on Monday. Spanning 6.5 kilometers, the state-of-the-art tunnel connects the scenic valley of Sonmarg with the Ladakh region, ensuring uninterrupted access even during harsh winters.

Tourism in the Sonmarg region is set to witness a significant boost, as the tunnel eliminates the previous travel restrictions imposed by heavy snowfall. The inauguration ceremony saw PM Modi cutting the ceremonial ribbon and personally touring the tunnel. Built on the strategic Srinagar-Leh National Highway, the Z-Morh Tunnel is a two-lane engineering marvel situated at an altitude of 8,650 feet. The tunnel features a 7.5-meter-wide escape passage for emergencies, ensuring safety alongside functionality.

Construction Timeline and Cost

Initiated in 2015, the ambitious project reached completion in 2023, with a total investment of ₹2,700 crore. The tunnel’s robust design and high-altitude construction reflect modern engineering expertise, making it a vital asset for the region.
