Mohun Bagan Storms into ISL Playoffs with a Commanding Win Over Punjab FC

Kolkata – Mohun Bagan secured their place in the ISL 2024-25 playoffs in emphatic fashion, delivering a resounding 3-0 victory over Punjab FC at the Yuva Bharati Sports Stadium on Wednesday evening. With this triumph, the Mariners became the first team to qualify for the next stage and are now within touching distance of the League Shield title.

The stakes were high for Jose Molina’s side, needing three wins and a draw to reach the crucial 10-point mark. However, the Mariners showcased their dominance, sealing a comprehensive win over Punjab FC, whom they had already defeated 3-1 in the first round of the league.

A Tense First Half

The first half saw Mohun Bagan struggling to find their usual rhythm. Despite multiple attempts from Manvir Singh, Liston Colasso, and Colaco, the team failed to create clear-cut opportunities. The game took an intense turn just before halftime when Punjab midfielder Ashish Pradhan clashed with Abdul Sahal Samad, resulting in Samad leaving the field injured. Molina was forced to bring in Abhishek Suryavanshi as a replacement.

Second-Half Domination

After a sluggish start, the Mariners returned from the break with renewed energy, shifting into top gear. Molina’s tactical switch saw Ashish Rai being replaced by Ashique Kuruniyan, adding pace to their attack.

In the 55th minute, Australian forward Jamie McLaren ignited the Mohun Bagan fans, skillfully converting a pinpoint cross from Deependu Biswas. His swift turn and precise shot left Punjab goalkeeper Ravi Kumar helpless, setting the tone for the rest of the game.

Just seven minutes later, Liston Colasso doubled the lead with a sensational curled shot from a tight angle, further strengthening Mohun Bagan’s grip on the match. As the game neared its conclusion, McLaren struck again in the 90th minute, capitalizing on a defensive error from Punjab’s Ravi Kumar. The Aussie striker calmly slotted the ball into the net, securing a dominant win for his team.

Eyeing the League Shield

With 46 points from 20 matches, Mohun Bagan is now just seven points away from clinching the League Shield, with four matches remaining in the season. The Mariners’ impeccable home record—nine victories in as many matches—has been a key factor in their commanding position at the top of the table.

As the ISL season nears its climax, Jose Molina’s men have their sights firmly set on silverware, with momentum and confidence on their side. Mohun Bagan fans can now dream of adding another glorious chapter to the club’s storied legacy.
