A Life Devoted to Music and Art

Born in 1942 in Barisal, now part of Bangladesh, Mukhopadhyay’s life was deeply intertwined with Bengali culture and music. His compositions, often filled with poignant themes and powerful storytelling, continue to be revered by generations. Apart from Ami Banglay Gaan Gai, his song Dinga Bhasao Sagare remains an all-time favorite among music lovers. His ability to weave lyrics and melody with deep emotions made him a unique figure in the world of Bengali art.

Battling Illness, Chief Minister’s Visit

Mukhopadhyay had been ailing for some time and was admitted to the main block of SSKM Hospital. Despite the formation of a special medical board, his condition continued to deteriorate. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who visited him at the hospital just days before his passing, expressed her deep grief.

Recalling her visit, she said, “I asked him, ‘How is Pratulda?’ He raised his hands in response, but I could see the pain in his eyes. His oxygen levels fluctuated, and he was struggling to breathe. It was heartbreaking.”

Banerjee, who had been closely monitoring his health over the past few months, emphasized the musician’s contributions, calling his death an “irreparable loss to Bengali music.”

A Legacy That Lives On

Mukhopadhyay’s legacy extends beyond his music. He also made his mark as a playback singer in the film Gonsai Baganer Bhoot. A man of few words, he preferred solitude but remained an enduring figure in the artistic community. His works have received several accolades, including the Bangavibhushan, Sangeet Mahasamman, and Nazrul Smriti Puraskar.
