Kolkata: As the city gears up to welcome the New Year, Kolkata Police commissioner Manoj Verma has issued a strong reminder that festivities don’t come with a license to flout rules. Emphasising the importance of safety and discipline, the commissioner highlighted the extensive security arrangements being implemented by the Kolkata Police to ensure a joyous and trouble-free celebration.

“New Year’s Eve is about happiness, not recklessness,” stated commissioner Verma at a press conference. He warned that any unruly behaviour, from eve-teasing to drunk driving, would result in immediate and strict action. “The Kolkata Police is on high alert and will not hesitate to take offenders straight to jail,” he said.

Comprehensive Security Measures

To maintain order across the city, the Kolkata Police has ramped up its vigilance, especially in high-footfall areas such as Park Street, clubs, hotels, and river ghats. Plainclothes officers, including women police personnel, will patrol these locations to curb incidents of harassment or mischief.

“Women’s safety is a top priority,” the commissioner stressed. “If anyone is caught teasing or harassing women, they will face immediate consequences.” In addition, police checkpoints will monitor traffic for instances of drink driving and reckless behaviour.

Lessons from Christmas: A Zero-Tolerance Policy

Citing the success of heightened security during Christmas celebrations, where action was taken against 1,945 individuals for various violations, Verma assured that the same level of strictness would be maintained on New Year’s Eve. “The goal is not just to prevent lawlessness but to create a safe environment for everyone to enjoy the festivities,” he added.

A City Under Surveillance

The commissioner also addressed broader concerns about illegal activities. Recently, a Bangladeshi national was arrested from a hotel on Park Street for allegedly entering India illegally and forging documents, including an Aadhaar card. This incident has prompted heightened vigilance, with Park Street and other key areas under tight security to prevent any potential threats during the celebrations.

Celebrate Responsibly

While urging citizens to embrace the New Year with joy and optimism, Verma also offered a traditional twist. “Good luck comes to those who celebrate responsibly,” he quipped. The commissioner’s message is clear: follow the rules, prioritise safety, and welcome 2025 with positivity and respect for others.

Kolkata is all set to light up with festivities, but the watchful eyes of the Kolkata Police will ensure that the revelry doesn’t spiral into chaos. So, party responsibly, stay safe, and let the New Year bring prosperity and happiness to all!
