Kolkata: The inauguration of the new building at the Jyoti Basu Sociology and Research Centre began on Friday, marking a significant milestone for the CPI(M) in West Bengal. The ceremony, held at Jyoti Basu Nagar (New Town), saw the presence of prominent party leaders, including Politburo members and Central Committee members.
The foundation stone for the new building was laid exactly a year ago by the late CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury. Despite his passing, the construction was completed within a year, a testament to the dedication and commitment of those involved.
The inauguration ceremony commenced with a cultural program featuring folk songs performed by artists from the Indian People’s Theatre Association. Senior CPI(M) leaders, including Gautam Deb, Rabin Deb, Mira Bhattacharya (Wife of Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee), and Rezwana Chowdhury Banya, were present at the event.
Speaking at the occasion, Biman Basu, president of the Sociology Centre, highlighted the significant contributions of the Left Front government under the leadership of Comrade Jyoti Basu. He emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of the people despite numerous challenges.
The new building was formally inaugurated by CPI(M) Politburo Coordinator Prakash Karat. Reflecting on Jyoti Basu’s enduring legacy, Karat recalled the profound impact of the former Chief Minister on the lives of the poor and working class.
“After Jyoti Basu‘s passing in 2010, I wrote, ‘There will be no more Jyoti Basu’,” Karat said. “He dedicated his life to the cause of the people, fighting tirelessly for their rights and welfare both as a trade unionist and as Chief Minister of West Bengal.”
The event also saw the launch of a unique diary documenting Jyoti Basu’s daily activities during a specific year.
The inauguration of the new building at the Jyoti Basu Sociology and Research Centre is a significant step in preserving the legacy of the legendary leader and continuing the work of the CPI(M) in West Bengal.
