The much-anticipated Joydev Kenduli Mela 2025 officially commenced on Monday, drawing massive crowds to the Char of Ajay Nad in West Bengal. The event, inaugurated by SRDA Chairman Anubrata Mandal, marked the beginning of the traditional fair amidst the festivities of Makar Sankranti.
Devotion and Celebration at Its Peak
Lakhs of devotees gathered to partake in the holy Makar Snan (ritual bath) and offered prayers at the sacred Radhabinod Temple. The spiritual essence of the occasion was amplified by the presence of thousands of Bauls and Fakirs, who infused the air with soulful melodies and traditional performances, capturing the heart of this rural festival.
By afternoon, the fairgrounds brimmed with an ever-growing crowd, as pilgrims and tourists thronged to witness the cultural vibrancy and religious fervor of the mela.
Unparalleled Security and Safety Measures
To ensure the safety and convenience of the visitors, the district administration has deployed extensive security arrangements. This year’s fair boasts:
- 200 CCTV cameras and 16 watch towers strategically placed across the premises.
- 33 police assistance booths for immediate support.
- Three disaster management teams stationed at the bathing ghats.
- Five firefighting teams to address potential fire hazards.
- A robust team comprising 1,634 civic volunteers, 736 police personnel, and 17 anti-crime teams patrolling the grounds.
Drone surveillance further enhances the security measures, while two women’s safety teams ensure a secure environment for female visitors.
Streamlined Facilities for Pilgrims
In response to the massive turnout, the administration has made thoughtful arrangements to avoid overcrowding and ensure smooth operations. These include:
- Eight parking lots and 23 drop gates to manage vehicular movement.
- 251 akhras (temporary and permanent accommodations) for Bauls and Fakirs.
- Adequate toilets to maintain hygiene and cleanliness.
- complete medical support, including four ambulances on call for emergencies and two medical teams.
A Parallel Scene at Gangasagar
As Joydev Kenduli Mela thrives, another hub of devotion, Gangasagar, saw an unprecedented influx of pilgrims celebrating Makar Sankranti. From early morning, devotees braved the cold to take the holy dip, with the auspicious Mahendrakshan bathing time stretching from 6:58 AM today to 6:58 AM tomorrow. The shores echoed with chants of “Har Har Mahadev” and “Ganga Maiki Jay,” as pilgrims sought spiritual merit and salvation.
The Joy Continues
The Joydev Kenduli Mela promises a captivating cultural and religious experience until its conclusion on January 16. Visitors can immerse themselves in the vibrant traditions, soulful music, and joyous celebrations that define this iconic event. With meticulous planning and a festive atmosphere, the fair stands as a testament to the rich heritage of West Bengal.
