January 8, 2025 – V Narayanan, a distinguished alumnus of IIT Kharagpur, has been named the new chief of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The announcement, made by the Centre on Tuesday, positions Narayanan as both the head of ISRO and the Secretary of the Department of Space. He will assume his new role on January 14, succeeding S Somnath, for a term of two years.
A Visionary Leader in Space Science
Narayanan brings nearly four decades of experience in the field of space technology and propulsion systems. Having joined ISRO in 1984, his illustrious career includes significant contributions to the development of rockets and space vehicles. Notably, he played a pivotal role in the early days of the Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle (ASLV) and Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) programs at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center.
Currently serving as the Director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC), a critical unit of ISRO, Narayanan is renowned for his expertise in cryogenic engine technology, a field in which he pursued his M.Tech and later a Ph.D. from IIT Kharagpur. His academic brilliance earned him a gold medal from the Astronautical Society of India.
A Glimpse into His Legacy
As a trailblazer in India’s space program, Narayanan’s contributions have been instrumental in advancing ISRO’s capabilities in rocket propulsion and spacecraft systems. Under his leadership at LPSC, ISRO achieved milestones in liquid propulsion technology, a cornerstone for India’s ambitious space missions.
His appointment comes at a time when ISRO is eyeing groundbreaking projects, including the Gaganyaan mission and lunar exploration programs. With his vast experience and visionary approach, Narayanan is expected to lead ISRO into an era of even greater global prominence in space research and technology.
The Road Ahead
Narayanan’s appointment marks a significant transition in ISRO’s leadership, signaling continuity in its robust scientific foundation while paving the way for innovative advancements. As the space agency prepares to tackle ambitious goals, his expertise and leadership will be crucial in charting new territories in space exploration.
The legacy of ISRO’s outgoing chief, S Somnath, leaves behind a strong foundation, and the baton now passes to Narayanan, whose storied career promises to take ISRO to new heights.
