Kolkata – Train services on the Howrah line are once again facing major disruptions, causing frustration among daily commuters. Eastern Railway has announced the cancellation of several trains this Sunday due to ongoing traffic and power blocks. Additionally, several train timings have been revised, further complicating travel plans for passengers.
Cancellations Hit Hard
The cancellations include some crucial local services, such as:
- Train 37334 from Tarakeswar, scheduled for Sunday, January 19.
- Train 37323 from Howrah to Tarakeswar on the same day.
These disruptions come as part of an extended period of cancellations, with over 60 local trains already impacted on the Howrah branch between December 21 and February 1. The construction of two new lanes of the Benares Road Overbridge is the primary cause of the block, affecting vital routes like Howrah-Bandel, Howrah-Sheoraphuli, Howrah-Belur Math, and Howrah-Sreerampur locals.
Timings Revised
To add to the inconvenience, several train schedules have been altered. Notable changes include:
- 37749 Bandel-Katwa Local will now leave Bandel at 12:45 PM instead of 12:15 PM.
- 37374 Goghat-Howrah Local will depart Goghat at 1:10 PM instead of 1:20 PM.
Passengers are urged to check the updated schedules before traveling to avoid confusion and delays.
Sealdah Branch Under Maintenance
The situation isn’t limited to the Howrah branch. Eastern Railway has also announced maintenance work on the Sealdah branch for four consecutive days. A 100-hour power block has been planned to replace the old steel girders of rail overbridges between Dumdum-Dankuni and Balighat-Balihalt stations.
The affected rail bridge, constructed nearly 95 years ago during British rule, has deteriorated significantly over time. The steel girders of Bridge No. 15/CCR have reached a critical condition, necessitating immediate replacement. Once replaced with new RCC box structures, train speeds on this route are expected to improve, and maintenance will become more efficient.
Broader Impact on Services
During the maintenance period, long-pending engineering work and other track repairs will also be carried out. The Eastern Railway has assured that these upgrades will enhance the overall efficiency and safety of train operations in the future.
Passengers Brace for More Disruptions
For now, commuters are advised to plan their journeys carefully and stay updated on train schedules. While these works aim to improve infrastructure and safety, the current wave of cancellations and delays has put a strain on passengers relying on local train services for their daily commute.
With the ongoing power blocks and bridge replacements, the Eastern Railway promises a smoother and faster journey once the projects are completed. Until then, patience remains the key for thousands of affected travelers.
