Kolkata – The East West Metro’s Green Line made headlines today with a groundbreaking trial run from Sealdah to Esplanade, completing the journey in an impressive 11 minutes. The much-anticipated route, passing through Bowbazar—a site of previous challenges—has now showcased its resilience and progress, marking a monumental achievement for Kolkata Metro.
Once a site of setbacks, Bowbazar has been transformed into a smooth transit zone, paving the way for this seamless underground travel. The disaster-stricken stretch now stands as a testament to modern engineering and determination. Today’s full-fledged Metro rake trial follows a successful trolley trial earlier, with the journey marking a significant milestone for the East West Metro project.
Speaking about the successful trial, Metro Rail General Manager P. Uday Kumar Reddy, who rode in the driver’s cabin, expressed optimism about the project. “This marks a pivotal step in connecting Sealdah to Esplanade and eventually integrating the entire route from Sector Five to Howrah Maidan,” said Reddy.
The trial run is set to continue over the coming days, with inspections by the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) to follow. Once approved, the entire East West Metro corridor—India’s first underwater metro line—will become fully operational, easing the daily commute for thousands of passengers.
Revolutionizing Daily Travel
Commuters and city planners alike are hailing this development as a game-changer. The East West Metro promises to reduce travel time and provide a reliable, efficient mode of transport, alleviating the hardships of daily travelers. The Green Line’s connection to the larger metro system is expected to reshape Kolkata’s urban transit landscape, boosting connectivity and economic activity.
India’s First Underwater Metro
The East West Metro’s underwater section, which crosses the Hooghly River, is a marvel in itself. As India’s only underwater metro route, it is set to attract attention nationwide and redefine urban transport innovation in the country.
With the Sealdah-Esplanade route nearing completion and full services on the horizon, the countdown to a new era of underground connectivity has begun. Kolkata is ready to embrace the magic of the East West Metro, one smooth ride at a time.
