Kolkata: After 4-5 days of slow Mercury drop in December, Winter lovers finally opened their eyes on Friday morning to slightly chilly weather. Even if it isn’t cold, Bengalis are happy to get their favourite season back after a long time. Streets have been filled with sweaters, light jackets, or hoodies. People are hopeful about enjoying Kolkata winter. However, the weather department is not showing any hope for this. According to a report from the Alipore Meteorological Department, the drop in Mercury is temporary and it is going to rise again by 2 to 3 degrees due to the occurrence of a western storm.
Cyclone Fengal, which earlier made landfall near the Pondicherry coast, had slight impacts on West Bengal weather. Due to a brief scattered rain over the weekend, the sky remained cloudy, as winter chills passed away. In several districts of West Bengal, the light spell of winter vanished at the onset of the cyclone. As the effect slowly fades out, the biting cold is likely to return.
As of December 6, 2024, the minimum and maximum temperatures in Kolkata are likely to be around 17.97 °C and 28.79 °C. The relative humidity will be around 47%. In all districts of North Bengal and the western districts of South Bengal, the cold will be more pronounced. The sky is predicted to be clear, while you can soak in the warmth of sunshine. But, don’t forget your sunscreens and sunglasses!
While winter is still here, there are plenty of things to look forward to. Kolkata brings in celebrations and activities in Winter, such as musical concerts, theaters, food exhibitions, and much more. Explore the famous lake of Rabindra Sarovar, enjoy jazz evenings, and attend storytelling programs to immerse yourself in the wintry beauty of this city.
As the heart of Bengalis long for “Winter”, it is still time to wait and see what the city has in store for us!
