Kolkata- Bengal is witnessing a sudden spell of heavy rain and thunderstorms, disrupting normal life across several districts, including Kolkata. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange and yellow alert, warning residents of potential extreme weather conditions.

Storms Sweep Across Bengal

On the eve of winter, torrential rain lashed Kolkata, Howrah, North 24 Parganas, and South 24 Parganas. The IMD forecasts that more showers, accompanied by thunder and lightning, are expected within the next 1-2 hours. Several regions, including Hooghly, Burdwan, and Paschim Midnapore, have already begun experiencing storms and hail. Since the morning, continuous rainfall has drenched the districts of Bankura and Burdwan, with thunderstorms likely to persist until Sunday.

Gusty Winds & Thunderstorms Expected

The weather department has predicted winds reaching speeds of 40-50 km/h in several districts. The impact is expected to be most severe in East and West Burdwan, West Midnapore, Jhargram, North 24 Parganas, Hooghly, and Nadia, where thunderstorms and hailstorms will accompany the gusty winds. Other districts of South Bengal may also experience winds reaching 30-40 km/h, along with intermittent rain, thunder, and lightning.

North Bengal to Experience Light Rain

While South Bengal battles heavy downpours, North Bengal is also set to experience a spell of light rain and thunderstorms on Saturday and Sunday. Although the intensity is expected to be lower, residents are advised to remain cautious, especially in regions prone to sudden weather changes.

With unpredictable weather patterns unfolding, authorities have urged residents to take necessary precautions. People are advised to stay indoors during thunderstorms, avoid waterlogged areas, and secure loose objects that may be affected by strong winds.
