Kolkata: In an unprecedented move, Bally Bridge Shut Down, a crucial connector for both road and rail traffic in Kolkata, will face a significant closure, leading to major inconveniences for commuters. From midnight on January 22 to January 27, traffic on one section of the bridge will be completely halted to facilitate essential maintenance. Adding to the woes, train services on the Dankuni branch will be suspended for 100 hours, intensifying the commuting chaos.
Alternate Routes and Expected Impact
To manage the disruption, buses, and vehicles heading towards Dankuni will be diverted via the Nivedita Bridge. The administration has assured that no toll tax will be imposed on buses rerouted through this alternative. However, while vehicles traveling towards Kolkata can still use a part of Bally Bridge, those exiting the city towards Bali Halt, Bombay Road, or Delhi Road will be barred from using the bridge.
Private bus operators, who raised concerns about passenger hardships, met with officials from the transport department, railways, and National Highways Authority to finalize the detour plans. Passengers have been warned to prepare for delays and possible congestion on the alternate routes, especially during peak hours.
Bally Bridge Shut Down: 100-Hour Train Shutdown Adds to Passenger Woes
Further complicating the situation, the Eastern Railway will halt train operations on the Sealdah-Dankuni section from 4 am on January 23 to 4 am on January 27. This shutdown is essential to replace the aging iron girders between Bally Bridge and Bali Halt Station.
As a result, 22 pairs of Dankuni locals have been canceled, alongside several mail and express trains. For passengers traveling during this period, special arrangements are being made at Nivedita Bridge, where buses will drop off commuters to connect with the Howrah line trains.
Coordinated Efforts Underway
Authorities are working in unison to manage the disruption and minimize inconvenience. A series of high-level meetings have been held, including one on Saturday at the transport building with representatives from railways, police, and the National Highways Authority.
Transport officials have urged commuters to plan their journeys in advance, avoid unnecessary travel during the affected days, and remain patient as these critical infrastructure upgrades are undertaken.
