New Delhi: India mourns the loss of a towering statesman and economist, Dr. Manmohan Singh, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. The former Prime Minister, known as the architect of India’s economic liberalization, breathed his last at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi due to age-related ailments.

A statement from AIIMS detailed the circumstances of his demise:
“With profound grief, we inform the passing of Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India, aged 92. After a sudden loss of consciousness at his residence on December 26, 2024, he was rushed to AIIMS at 8:06 PM. Despite all resuscitative efforts, he was declared dead at 9:51 PM.”

Dr. Singh, who served as India’s Prime Minister for two consecutive terms (2004–2014) under the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA), had been battling deteriorating health in recent months. He is survived by his wife, Gurcharan Singh, and their three daughters.

Tributes Pour In

Prime Minister Narendra Modi led the nation in paying tribute to the leader, posting an emotional message on X (formerly Twitter):
“India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. From humble beginnings, he rose to become a respected economist and visionary. His impactful tenure as Finance Minister and Prime Minister shaped India’s economic policies and parliamentary discourse. Om Shanti.”

Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, rushed to AIIMS upon hearing the news, while party chief Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, attending a meeting in Karnataka, cut their engagements short to return to Delhi.

Legacy of Leadership

Dr. Singh’s legacy is unparalleled. As Finance Minister in 1991, he spearheaded economic reforms under Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao, pulling India back from the brink of financial collapse. His policies marked the beginning of India’s transformation into a global economic powerhouse.

During his tenure as Prime Minister, Dr. Singh championed initiatives like the Right to Education, the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), and India’s civil nuclear agreement with the United States.

Known for his integrity, humility, and unflinching commitment to public service, Dr. Singh was a rare blend of academic brilliance and political acumen. His calm demeanor and measured words left an indelible mark on Indian politics.
