A seven-month-old baby in Kolkata was allegedly raped on November 30 when no one was at home. This incident came to light when someone spotted the baby on the footpath near a public toilet. The baby is now under treatment, and the police have registered the case under the POCSO Act. An accused was arrested in Jhargram in connection with this heinous crime.

According to the report of  Burtolla Police Station, on 30/11/2024 around 1:45 hrs, residents informed the police that a baby was crying on the footpath. The local police went there and found a baby in front of said premises. Two footpath dwellers informed the local police that their 7-month-old baby girl was missing, and these two slum dwellers identified the minor.

The police also reported to PTI that the doctors of RG Kar Hospital were shocked to see the injuries in the private parts of the infant. The officer also mentioned that several scratch marks on her body indicate sexual molestation.

The police further stated that the initial investigation indicated the baby was abducted from the footpath, taken elsewhere, and subjected to brutal sexual assault. It is suspected that this heinous crime may have been done by some vagabonds. After they committed the crime, the baby was abandoned. The police are checking the CCTV footage and talking with the locals.

A doctor from RG Kar mentioned that the baby is primarily treated at the gynecological ward and then transferred to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Police arrested suspect Rajib Ghosh, 34, alias Gobra, from a resort in Gopiballavpur in the Jhargram district where he worked as a cleaner. The accused, who has been arrested in connection to this case, will be produced before a court on Thursday, Dec. 5.
