Kathmandu: A powerful earthquake rocked Nepal in the early hours of the morning, sending tremors across neighboring Indian states, including Bihar, West Bengal, and Sikkim. The shock, measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale according to the National Center for Seismology, struck Bagmati province at 2:36 AM, sparking panic among residents.
While the National Center for Seismology recorded a 6.1 magnitude quake, other international agencies reported varying intensities. The German Research Center for Geosciences estimated the magnitude at 5.6, whereas the US Geological Survey placed it at 5.5. The quake originated at a depth of 10 kilometers below the surface.
Panic and Structural Damage in Nepal
Though no casualties have been reported so far, the tremor caused visible cracks in multiple houses and police posts across Nepal. Authorities are currently assessing potential structural damages. Pasang Sherpa, chairman of Nepal’s Koshi Municipality, confirmed a landslide in Dugunagarhi due to the quake but reassured that there were no damages since the area lacked human settlements.
Impact on India: Tremors in Bihar, Bengal, and Sikkim
The strong tremors were felt in several Indian states, including Bihar, Siliguri, Darjeeling, and Sikkim. Startled residents rushed out of their homes in fear, with many reporting vibrations that lasted for several seconds.
“I woke up to my bed shaking. It was terrifying, and I immediately ran outside,” said a resident of Siliguri. Similar accounts were reported in Patna, Darjeeling, and Gangtok, where people feared potential aftershocks.
Authorities on High Alert
Local authorities in Nepal and India are closely monitoring the situation for any aftershocks or further developments. The earthquake has once again highlighted the vulnerability of the region to seismic activities, given its location along major tectonic fault lines.
Although there have been no major casualties or destruction so far, officials continue to assess the full extent of the impact. More updates are expected as rescue teams and local administrations evaluate the aftermath of the quake.
Stay Prepared
Experts advise residents in seismic zones to stay prepared for aftershocks and follow safety protocols. People are urged to secure heavy furniture, identify safe spots in their homes, and keep emergency kits ready.
The recent tremors serve as a stark reminder of the region’s earthtremor-prone nature, emphasizing the need for robust preparedness and response mechanism.
