Howrah: A century after India’s first electric local train revolutionized commuter travel, history repeats itself with a modern marvel. On February 3, 1925, the country witnessed a landmark event when the first Electric Motor Unit (EMU) local train ran from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus to Kurla in Mumbai. Now, a hundred years later, the Eastern Railway has commemorated this milestone by introducing a state-of-the-art local train, ‘Bajra,’ in Howrah.

This sleek and cutting-edge local train, distinctly different in design and color from its predecessors, made its grand debut on February 3, 2025, marking the centenary of India’s electric railway service. Crafted by the dedicated workforce of Lilua Car Shed, Bajra embodies the evolution of Indian Railways, blending tradition with innovation.

With its launch, Bajra began operations as a high-speed galloping local train on the Chord Line from Howrah, promising a faster and more efficient commute for passengers. The move underscores Indian Railways’ commitment to modernization while paying tribute to its rich legacy.

As Bajra speeds across the tracks, it symbolizes not just a century of progress but also the promising future of India’s railway network. The centenary celebration is not merely a look back at history—it’s a step forward into the next era of rail travel in the country.
