Kolkata: In a significant escalation of political tensions, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee strongly criticized Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat for his recent controversial remarks on the country’s independence. Mamata’s comments came during a press conference at Nabanna, where she labeled Bhagwat’s statement as “anti-national” and demanded its immediate withdrawal.

The controversy erupted after Bhagwat, speaking in Indore, suggested that India truly gained independence on the day of the inauguration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, urging that the event be celebrated as “Pratishtha Dwadashi.” His remarks have sparked outrage across the political spectrum, with opposition leaders denouncing the statement as an affront to India’s independence and historical legacy.

Mamata Condemns RSS Chief’s Remarks

Reacting strongly, Mamata Banerjee said, “I believe our country gained independence on August 15, 1947. To suggest otherwise is not only factually incorrect but also deeply disrespectful to the countless sacrifices made by freedom fighters. Such comments undermine our history, our republic, and our democracy.”

The Chief Minister emphasized the contributions of Bengal and Punjab to the freedom struggle, stating, “Bengal played a pivotal role in the freedom movement, followed by Punjab. The idea of diminishing this history is dangerous and unacceptable.” She also paid homage to prominent leaders and revolutionaries, including Mahatma Gandhi, Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, and others, asserting that their sacrifices cannot be forgotten.

A Threat to National Unity

Describing Bhagwat’s remarks as “dangerous,” Mamata added, “Attempts to rewrite history or alter the narrative of our independence will erode the country’s identity. Our independence is our pride, and we will not allow anyone to distort it.” She expressed deep sadness over the statement, warning that such rhetoric could harm the fabric of India’s unity and diversity.

Mamata further criticized the RSS and its ideological allies, accusing them of systematically altering historical records and undermining the principles of the Constitution. “From changing history books to altering the Constitution through parliamentary majorities, the agenda is clear,” she said, adding that the nation must remain vigilant against such attempts.

Opposition United in Condemnation

Mamata’s remarks add to the growing chorus of criticism from opposition leaders, including Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, who stated that Bhagwat would face legal consequences if such comments were made in another country. The political uproar underscores the broader ideological battle between the BJP and its critics over the interpretation of India’s history and identity.

Independence is Eternal

In her concluding remarks, Mamata reaffirmed her commitment to protecting the integrity of India’s independence and democracy. “India’s independence is eternal. We will sacrifice everything to preserve it. The history of our freedom struggle is sacred, and no one can take that away from us.”

As the political storm continues to brew, Bhagwat’s remarks have reignited debates about the role of ideological organizations in shaping India’s narrative, setting the stage for an intense political showdown.
